Why Retainers Are Important

VANCOUVER, SURREY, and LANGLEY BRITISH COLUMBIA - The invisible braces have come off, so what is next?

After your orthodontic dental treatment is completed, you're fitted for a retainer. Regardless of whether you had invisible aligners or metal brackets, getting your braces off is a time to celebrate. The next step is maintaining your beautiful smile.

"To keep your teeth straight, you will need to wear your retainers," says child orthodontics provider Dr. Aly Kanani. "The teeth will shift if you don't wear them."

The purpose of a retainer is to allow the bone surrounding the teeth to strengthen and to prevent individual teeth from moving out of place.

Many orthodontists recommend wearing retainers full-time for six months to one year following orthodontic treatment. After a year, you will only need to wear them at night.

"It can be difficult for some patients to remember their retainers every night," says Dr. Kanani, an adult braces provider. "There are permanent options available."

A permanent retainer is a thin wire that is placed on the lingual side on the incisors, preventing the teeth from shifting. This is a great option for adults who don't want to wear a retainer every night.

Flossing with a permanent retainer can be challenging; however, with floss threaders, you can complete this task with ease.

This is a time to celebrate and show off your beautiful, healthy smile. Wearing your retainer consistently can ensure that your teeth stay straight.

Make A New Year's Resolution For A Healthier Smile

LANGLEY, SURREY AND VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA - Start the New Year right with an appointment with your orthodontist.
Straight teeth are easier to brush, floss and function with. Misaligned teeth may harbor food and bacteria in crevices difficult to clean.
Bacteria can lead to the gums becoming inflamed. Studies have shown that gum disease could be related to heart disease.

At any age, orthodontic treatment can create beautiful results. Adults and teenagers have the option of going through a virtually invisible treatment, with Invisalign and Invisalign Teen. There is no excuse for not getting a healthy, vibrant smile.
"The advancements of orthodontics allow anyone to comfortably receive treatment," says Dr. Aly Kanani, Langley invisible braces provider. "The different types of braces we offer provide options for those who are self-conscious about treatment."

Another advantage of straight teeth is the function of the bite. Jaw problems can be corrected during orthodontic treatment. The earlier it is detected, the better. The recommended age to be seen by is seven.

Once the bite is corrected, eating and speaking become easier. Cross-bites, open-bites and under-bites can cause a person to grind their teeth, resulting in wear and tear. Aligned teeth correct the pain associated with grinding the teeth.
If you have been considering the idea of braces, look into it now. Preventing future problems is key. The sooner you get the braces on, the sooner you can show off that beautiful smile.

Surrey orthodontic braces Specialist Offers Latest Advancement

LANGLEY, VANCOUVER AND SURREY, BRITISH COLUMBIA - Dr. Aly Kanani, an orthodontic braces provider, offers the latest in Invisalign technology.
Invisalign G4 is the new creation of SmartForce clinical innovations. This advancement gives a better outcome, and is expected to give an answer to challenging cases faced by many dentists, according to the Align Technology website.

"The most advanced techniques are used in the office," says orthodontic specialist Kanani. "This ensures our patients are getting the best treatment available."
Kanani talks about some of the new features for Invisalign G4.

Root Tip Control
Two dots are attached to the upper central incisors, upper canines or lower canines. This gives more control of the root tip. This can correct a gap between the upper central incisors, a midline shift and mesio-distal uprighting.

Control Of Upper Laterals
One dot is attached on the front surface of the lateral, and pressure point is created on the lingual side of the aligner. This creates optimal force to push the tooth into the correct position.
"This technique works great for lateral that stick out," says Kanani, an expert of clear braces. "It also help rotate the tooth."

Better Outcome For Open Bite Cases
For open bite cases, a multi-tooth method is used. Four dots are bonded to each of the upper incisors, and are activated when the aligner is put on. This gives the most effective force for these four teeth, and helps them move down into the correct position.
"Each tooth can be individually adjusted," says Kanani, a dental braces expert. "This can be a challenge using the original Invisalign."

Orthodontic treatment is continually advancing, and the Invisalign G4 allows the chance for an adult to improve an open bite without the need of metal wires and brackets. This new design can open the door for teens and adults, who are unsure of orthodontic treatment. The chance for a vibrant smile is within reach.

Vancouver Invisible Braces Pro Discusses Early Intervention

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA - If your child has an underbite, you can prevent surgical correction with early intervention.
Vancouver invisible braces specialist Dr. Aly Kanani recommends the first orthodontic screening by the age of 7. The reason is to advise you if orthodontic treatment is required and the best time for your child to be treated.
An underbite is the protrusion of the lower mandibular jaw causing the lower teeth to close in front of the top. This is also referred to as a class III malocclusion, according to the Dental Care section on the About.com.
Some disadvantages of an underbite include:
  • Jaw pain

  • Higher chance of wearing down the enamel

  • Chance of getting tooth decay is higher

  • Speech impediments

  • Lower self-esteem
Underbites can be caused by heredity, poor chewing habits, having a thumb-sucking habit and abnormalities of jaw growth in children, orthodontist Dr. Kanani says.
Correcting an underbite can depend on the severity of the case and the age of your child. Dr. Kanani, an elite Invisalign provider, discusses a few ways of correcting an underbite.

Expanders
Expanders are cemented to the top molars and premolars with metal bands. The metal bands are attached to a bar that runs across the roof of the mouth. In the middle of the bar is a key hole for the child to insert a turnkey into, activating the expander.
"The device is used to widen the upper jaw and help the bite fit better," says Dr. Kanani, an Invisalign removable braces expert. "With your child's cooperation, this can help their bite."

Reverse-Pull Headgear
This device is a metal vertical bar, which is attached to pads for the forehead and chin. The pads are for the comfort of your child. Little elastic bands are attached to the vertical bar and metal bands around the molars.

"This helps the upper jaw move forward gradually," says Dr. Kanani. "It is more effective when worn between the ages of 5 and 7, so early intervention is key."
This appliance requires complete cooperation from your child because it has to be worn for an absolute minimum of 12 hours per day.

Chin Cap
Chin caps can be added to the reverse-pull headgear for severe underbite cases. It wraps around the chin and top of the head. This is to prevent any movement in the lower jaw.
Surgery tends to be the only option for teenagers and adults because their jaw bones have fused together leaving limited room for simple correction. Occasionally, depending on the severity of the underbite, extractions of teeth in combination with braces may improve the situation; however, the jaw positions generally do not improve even though the teeth may fit better. Underbite surgery has to be performed by an oral surgeon and consists of fracturing and repositioning the jaw to where it should be.

A liquid diet is required, since jaw movement is difficult during the initial healing phases. In very rare cases, the jaw could move back into its original position.
Underbites cannot be left alone and will not correct itself over time. While your child is still young, an examination should be done as soon as possible to prevent the pain of surgery later.

Vancouver Orthodontist Provide Treatments for everyone

VANCOUVER - There could be many benefits to having healthy teeth and correct jaw alignment.
Misaligned teeth may be difficult to clean and maintain, which may result in tooth decay, gum disease or tooth loss. Improper jaw alignment could lead to abnormal wear of the enamel, problems with chewing and stress on the bone supporting the teeth.
"Treatment may be a success at any age," says Dr. Aly Kanani, a Vancouver orthodentist. "A beautiful smile can be the best benefit of orthodontics."
Kanani talks about the different options that a patient can have for orthodontic treatment.

Miniature Self-Ligating Metal Braces
Metal braces are typically a form of braces for kids. Orthodontist Kanani offers these state-of-the-art self-ligating brackets, which can make orthodontic treatment more efficient with its built in "sliding door" that holds the wire in place.
"This form of treatment uses high-tech, light-force wires to achieve tooth mobility with less pressure," says Kanani. "Less adjustments need to be made with these brackets, resulting in fewer visits and a dramatically reduce treatment time."

Clear Braces
This form of treatment may be a low-profile option for many patients. The clear brackets could create a vibrant smile without the look of metal. The shade of the brackets may differ from looking crystal clear to having a pearl-white tint.
The arch wires are typically metal; however, some wires can be coated with a tooth-colored paint for less detection.

Invisalign Clear Aligners
Invisalign and Invisalign Teen can be the type of treatment for adults and teenagers who are afraid of the traditional metal braces.Invisible orthodontics, such as Invisalign, are a form of treatment that could straighten the teeth with clear, removable aligners. This is generally a more popular pick among teens and adults because the treatment could go virtually unnoticed.
"Patients may remove the aligners to eat, brush and floss with ease," says Kanani. "Also, they can be comfortable to wear, since the patient doesn't have brackets and wires getting in the way."

Lingual Braces
This type of braces is placed on the inside surface of the tooth, for a completely invisible treatment. The iBraces, a brand of lingual braces, could be customized to the shape of the patient's teeth and dental needs. Adjustments could be made in the same way as traditional braces, but it is done on the backside surface of the teeth.
"Lingual brackets could give a patient efficient, effective tooth movement, while being the only truly invisible option of braces on the market," says Kanani. "No one will notice the patient is under the care of an orthodontist unless they are told."

Retainers
Once the braces are removed, the patient can be fitted for a retainer. Retainers may be worn full-time, until the orthodontist says otherwise. Retainers should be cleaned every day and kept in a case when not in the mouth. It is important to take care of the retainer because replacement may be expensive.
Usually, treatment time can range from one to three years. This time frame could change depending on the growth of the patient's mouth and the severity of their dental problem. Patients could respond differently to orthodontic treatment, so the time they are in braces can differ from the original estimate.
"In order to get the most effective treatment possible, it is important to follow the directions of the orthodontist," says Kanani. "This may be anywhere from the placement of brackets to the wear of the retainer after treatment."

Surrey Invisalign provider uses new technology

Surrey, BC - Fortunately for orthodontic patients, research is always finding ways to improve the efficiency and accuracy of braces' technology, as well as enhance the patient's orthodontic experience.

Surrey Invisalign provider Dr. Aly Kanani has taken advantage of these new developments and has recently added technology from Cadent, Inc. to his practice.

The new equipment includes the IQ system, the IOC scanner, and the iCast program - all of which are part of Cadent’s revolutionary iTiero system.

"This new technology will really revolutionize patient care in my practice," points out Kanani, a Vancouver orthodontist. "Because it improves the accuracy of the braces' design, the technology reduces the overall treatment time and decreases the necessary number of appointments."

Initial placement appointments for braces can take two hours or more. But the IQ system dramatically shortens the needed time, says Langley invisible braces specialist Kanani. IQ allows the orthodontist to simulate treatment before placing the brackets, seeing the results of treatment before it starts. Brackets are digitally positioned and attached to plastic holders. In the initial visit, the orthodontist pops the plastic holder, similar to a retainer, into a patient's mouth. After 15 minutes, once the glue has set, and the plastic holder can be removed, the brackets are optimally positioned. Only the wires need to be added.

The improved ease and accuracy of the treatment means the orthodontist needs to make fewer adjustments, so the braces are more comfortable. Improved accuracy means that patients spend less time in the doctor’s office and need fewer follow-up visits, lowering the cost of the braces. IQ can also reduce overall treatment time by as much as 30 percent, observes Vancouver braces provider Kanani. The digital simulations also allow the patients to see what their teeth will look like when they are finished with treatment.

Working with the IQ system, the IOC scanner, powered by iTero, scans the Surrey Orthodontics patient’s teeth and creates an extremely accurate digital model, the only one of its kind in Langley and surrey invisible braces office. It digitally captures the contours of the dentition and gingival (gum) structures, providing an accurate digital orthodontic scan in minutes - without invasive measures. Because it starts with a more accurate impression from the start, the scanner helps achieve better orthodontic treatment.

The iCast program allows the orthodontist to replace the traditional plaster cast with a far more accurate and versatile digital version. The digital iCast allows doctors to easily store, retrieve and share cases electronically - without the hassles of plaster casts. In the virtual environment, the orthodontist can manipulate the digital model and collect data through a wide range of diagnostic tools. He or she can view a patient's cast anywhere at any time from any computer - and consult with other healthcare providers. "The iCast system also allows you to take home with you a hard copy of your virtual 3D model - showing what your teeth look like 'before' and 'after,'"points out Kanani.

Surrey invisible braces pro treats missing incisors

Surrey, BC - Some children are born lacking upper lateral incisors, a condition that can be corrected with dental implants.

Until the child is old enough for implants, the spaces where the teeth should be must be kept open, points out Surrey invisible braces provider Dr. Aly Kanani.

According to the European Journal of Orthodontics, between one and two percent of children have congenitally missing upper lateral incisors. Usually it is adult teeth that are missing, but if the child is missing a baby tooth, it can mean that the adult replacement will not grow in as usual.

Kanani's Surrey orthodontics practices complete orthodontic treatment for most patients by the time they are 14 to 15. Dental implants are the treatment of choice for missing lateral incisors. But a teenager’s jaw will grow until he or she is about 18 years old, so implants cannot be inserted until then.

"Teeth will move given the opportunity, so you need a way to hold that space open for future implants. If you don't, the space will close and the patient will need additional orthodontic treatment when it’s time for the implant," says Kanani, a Surrey invisible braces provider. "So we need to maintain the space where the implant will be inserted. And we need to do so for several years."

With such patients, the Surrey braces specialist usually employs a fixed retainer which maintains the space in the patient’s mouth. This works in combination with either a removable retainer containing an artificial lateral incisor or a Maryland Bridge. The Bridge has a metal framework with an attached porcelain tooth. There are metal wings on each side of the prosthetic tooth that are bonded to the tongue side of the neighboring teeth, says the Surrey braces expert. When eating, the patient can take out the retainer and still have the lateral incisors in position.

When the patient has stopped growing, an oral surgeon will surgically insert dental implants directly into the jawbone. These implants will become anchors for the porcelain crowns that will permanently replace the missing teeth. Traditional dental implants need the patient to wait through a several month healing process that permits the implant to integrate itself into the jawbone through a process labeled osseointegration. Only then would the implant be ready to acquire a crown. Today, dentists have "immediate load" implants that allow the oral surgeon to attach the porcelain crown right away.

Kanani, a Surrey invisalign provider, observes: "Once they are in position, the dental implants and porcelain crowns will look, feel and act like natural teeth. After a while, most patients forget that those aren’t the teeth they should have been born with.”
