Langley Orthodontics Specialist Discusses Benefits of Twin Block Therapy for Jaw Correction

LANGLEY, BC — Most of today’s dental treatments are iterations of older dental techniques that have evolved over the course of years, decades, and even centuries. However, one treatment invented in the late 1970s by William Clark, a Scottish orthodontist, has survived the test of time and provides patients with amazing results with minimal discomfort.

Twin Block treatment allows orthodontists to manipulate the lower jaw to correct both a retracted jaw that results in overbites and small lower jaws. According to Langley orthodontics expert Dr. Aly Kanani, DMD, when Twin Block orthodontics are implemented at the correct age, patients can achieve optimal jaw alignment which allows an anatomically correct bite and even a more pleasing smile and facial profile.

“It may sound harsh to have blocks placed in the mouth, but it is actually a great treatment that sidesteps jaw surgery down the road in many instances,” says Dr. Kanani. “Treatment is best suited for children and can take as little as a year to provide a lifetime of benefits.”

Symptoms
There are generally two conditions that can be corrected by Twin Block treatment. These symptoms include a “retruded” jaw that is does not align with the upper jaw and also a “small” lower jaw that is narrower than the upper jaw.

The conditions can be caused by several factors, including genetics, excessive thumb sucking during infancy, posture, and other variables as well.

“It is really important for parents to bring their children to the orthodontist for checkups to evaluate the dental development and the growth and development of their jaws, to ensure that problems such as these are eradicated early on,” says Dr. Kanani, a Vancouver orthodontics provider. “Without early intervention, the patient will probably need more intensive treatment later on in life.”

Without Twin Block treatment during early development, children expressing these symptoms can grow to need intensive orthodontic treatment and even jaw surgery adds Dr. Kanani.

Treatment
Twin Block treatment is highly customizable to suit the unique bite of every patient. Modifications to the Twin Block appliances can be made at any time to adjust the position of the lower jaw or the width of the upper and lower jaw.

To be fitted for Twin Block appliances, the patient will have a model of his or her teeth made during an appointment with the orthodontist. Then, the wax model is sent to a dental lab for fabrication.

“The Twin Block appliances fit comfortably in a patient’s teeth, and don’t hinder their lifestyles whatsoever,” says Dr. Kanani, a Langley Invisalign provider. “Between all of my braces, Invisalign, and Twin Block patients, I know a whole lot about oral appliances, and I see only minor changes to my patients’ eating or speech habits while using Twin Block treatment, and even this disappears after one week or so.”

According to the Aurum Group, a dental manufacturing lab, the blocks themselves work together to accomplish a 70° angle that positions the upper and lower jaw in ideal position. The oral appliances can be worn all day long, and are easily adjustable by an orthodontist should the need for tweaks be necessary during the course of treatment notes Dr. Kanani.

“Treatment time can take anywhere up to one year,” says the Surrey invisible braces provider. “But, because the treatment doesn’t hurt or hinder children from their regular lifestyle, there is little to dislike.”

Prevention
Twin Block orthodontics is a non-invasive treatment that allows the jaw to actively adjust and position itself in the proper position before the jaw locks into an undesired position. This treatment is highly preferable to treatment alternatives such as headgear appliances, possibly future extractions of teeth, and even corrective jaw surgery.

“When compared to surgery, using a painless device such as Twin Blocks to actively adjust the teeth and jaw positions is a great alternative,” says the Langley braces provider.
